Entry requirements
At least two years of basic courses in Natural Sciences, equivalent to 50 points/75 ECTS credits in Biology and 20 points/30 ECTS credits in Chemistry. Biology courses should include Cell Biology, Genetics and Gene Technology, Structure and Physiology of Organisms, and Ecology. In addition, the course Limnology MN1 must be completed.
Aims
Goals for theoretical attainments: The course will give in depth knowledge in limnology. This includes a theoretical base for the understanding of structure and function of aquatic systems as well as knowledge about important processes within and between different habitats of the aquatic system. Achieved knowledge is tested by seminars, group projects, and a written exam. Goals for practical attainments: To construct and simulate mathematical models in a computer environment. To conduct different microbiological analyses such as measurement of biomass and production of primary producers and heterotrophic bacteria. To conduct common water and sediment chemistry analyses and quantitative analyses of benthic fauna and fish. Goals for proficiency: The student should acquire an ability to think and work scientifically and to practice the ability to express herself/himself orally and in text. The student will also practice skills in organising field studies, compose data and lead discussions during seminars and group exercises. The course will give a good basis for continuing research as well as applied limnology.
Content
The course is given in close connection to the activities of the research groups at the department and treats basic aquatic ecology with focus on how organisms, populations and communities interact with themselves and with the environment. The structure, function and dynamics of the aquatic food web are especially treated. The different subjects include microbiological processes in water and sediment, ecological and evolutionary processes among organisms within and between habitats and the optical and physical-chemical properties of water. Ecological processes in the pelagic are related to important processes in both the littoral as well as in sediment to give an understanding for ecological and biochemical interactions among different habitats. A scientific methodology is emphasised in which simulations of theoretical models are alternated by experiments, lectures and seminars. The course also partly takes place in the field with group projects in which sampling and analyses methodology are practiced under winter conditions. The group project is presented both orally and in a written report.
Instruction
Group-instructions, seminars, lectures, field and laboratory work. Attendance in seminars, field and laboratory work and connected lessons is compulsory.
Assessment
Examination is arranged during and at the end of the course. A passing grade for the entire course requires passing grades for the laboratory work and seminars. For students who have failed the exams during the course new exams will be arranged at the beginning of the autumn term, after Christmas and at the end of the spring term.
