Entry requirements

100 points natural science/technology including a minimum of 20 points chemistry.

Aims

After the course the student should have the knowledge to,

- Describe commonly used biomaterials such as metals, ceramics and polymers and their chemical composition, their properties and structure.

- Describe the general composition and function of cells, the extra cellular matrix and of tissue.

- Identify and explain methods for characterisation of biomaterials.

- Describe methods to modify biomaterial surfaces and select material for desired biological response.

- Describe interactions between biomaterials, proteins and cells.

- Describe the interactions between materials and tissue for short and long term implantation, and the difference in blood and tissue.

- Identify and explain methods for the characterisation of interaction between materials and tissue.

- Describe methods to repair and regenerate injured or lost functional tissue using materials, patient derived cells or stem cells.

Project: An important part of the course is the project. Within the project the students are trained to,

- Search, analyse and use scientific information to prepare a project plan.

- Execute a short research project in collaboration with other students, researchers and industry.

- Present the project orally and in writing.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and project work.

Assessment

Written examination (2 p) is organised during the course. Furthermore it is required that the student plans, executes and presents a project (3 p) that should be accepted by the end of the course.
