Entry requirements

Fourier analysis. Thermodynamics. Quantum Physics.

Aims

The purpose of this course is to provide basic

knowledge of the structure of crystalline matter

and their fundamental thermal, electrical and

magnetic properties.

Content

Building blocks of crystals: symmetry, crystal

structure, lattice, reciprocal lattice, crystal

binding.

Diffraction: Theory and experimental methods

Lattice dynamics: Phonons, specific heat,

anharmonic effects

Electron theory: Free electron model, band theory,

Fermi surfaces and metals.

Semiconductors: Electrons and holes, intrinsic and

impurity conductivity.

Superconductivity: zero resistance, Meissner

effect, type I and type II superconductors.

Magnetism: Dia- and paramagnetism.

Laboratory work: Specific heat, Superconductivity,

Semiconductors

Assignments: Diffraction, Electron bands.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required.
