Entry requirements
Introduction to Mathematics.
Aims
An introduction to numbers, vectors, matrices, polynomials, equations and systems of equations as well as graphs.
Content
Induction and recursion. Numbers: integers,
rational, real and complex. Polynomials.
Divisibility for numbers and polynomials,
prime number and prime polynomial, factorisation.
Euclid's algorithm, congruences. Elementary
combinatorics, permutations and combinations.
Algebraic equations and systems of equations.
Systems of linear equations. Matrices and matrix
calculus. Graphs and digraphs. Some simple
algorithms for graphs. Vectors in two and three
dimensions, lines and planes.
Instruction
Lectures and problem solving sessions.
Assessment
Written and, possibly, oral examination at the end
of the course. Moreover, compulsory assignments
may be given during the course.
