Entry requirements
Molecular biology. Methods in bioinformatics.
Aims
The course will provide knowledge about evolutionary processes at molecular and genomic levels, as well as the evolution of genetic systems. The course will also provide practical knowledge on molecular methods to study genetic variation within and between species.
Content
Molecular evolution: Mutation processes, mutation rate evolution, evolution of DNA sequences, the molecular clock, the neutral theory, positive and negative selection at molecular level, linkage disequilibrium, nucleotide composition, polymorphism and SNPs. Genome evolution: Genome size, sex chromosomes, mitochondrial DNA, evolution of repetetive DNA including microsatellites. Evolution of genetic systems: Evolution of sex and sexual reproduction, genetics of sex determination, domestication, human origin, ancient DNA analysis, genetic aspects of speciation.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, laboratory work and computer exercises.
Assessment
Written exam at the end of the course. To pass the course, literature and computer assignments must have been approved.
