Aims

Electromagnetism and wave physics are fundamental parts of physics and have vast technical applications. The aim of the course is both to give basic knowledge in the electromagnetic fields and also an introduction to electrical measurements. The aim is also to give basic knowledge of wave phenomenon of both mechanical and electromagnetic origin.

Content

Electrostatics. Coulomb's law, electric field

strength and potential. Gauss' law. Electric

polarisation D-field. Capacitors, electrostatic

energy. Electric current, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's

laws, emf, RC-circuits.

Stationary electromagnetism: Magnetic forces,

magnetic flux density, Ampere's law. Magnetic

polarisation H-field, dia, para and ferromagnetism,

hysteresis.

Electromagnetic induction: Faraday's law, self

induction, mutual induction. Energy of the

magnetic field. Maxwells equaitons.

Alternating current: Phasor diagrams, the complex

dimensions. Mechanical waves. Electromagnetic

waves. Laser radiation. Syncrotron radiation.

Phase and group velocity.

Doppler effect. Refexion, refraction, dispersion,

polarisation, birefringence. Geometrical optics,

optical instrumentation. Ray tracing. Interference.

Fraunhofer and Fresnel diffraction. Coherence in

time and space. Holography. Photometric units.

Laboratory work: Measuring techniques and

measuring instruments. Capacitance experiments.

Magnetic fields. Induction. Alternating currents.

Wave optics. Polarisation. Dispersion.

Free laboration in wave physics.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examinations at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required.
