Entry requirements

Calculus of several variables. Linear algebra. Fourier methods. Electromagnetism and wave physics.

Aims

The course is intended to give knowledge in vector analysis, which is to be applied in formulation of physical problems as partial differential equations. There will also be given a "how- to-do-it"-type knowledge of the methods for solving the most common partial diffential equations and on certain special functions and approximate methods.

Content

Nabla operator, integral theorems, curvlinear

coordinates, differentials, introduction to tensor

analysis.

Formulation of physical problems as partial

differential equations. Elementary methods for

solutions of partial differential equations:

separation of variables, expansion in

eigenfunctions, transforms.

Instruction

Lessons.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course.
