Entry requirements

Linear algebra. Calculus. Mathematical methods of physics.

Aims

To teach the fundamental concepts of Quantum

Mechanics, in particular its application in atomic

and molecular physics and chemistry. The course

should also make the students familiar with

both the theoretical methods and measurements

procedures in atomic- and molecular physics.

Content

Experimental background of quantum mechanics. Matter waves, diffraction experiments, wave-particle dualism, wave packets, probability interpretation.

Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. Schrödinger's equation and the wave function. Stationary states, atomic spectra. Expectation values, operators.

Systems in one dimension. Transmission and reflection. Eigenvalue problems. Orbital angular momentum and central fields.

The hydrogen bond. Spin. Identical particles.

Laboratory work: The student will be asked to present both oral and written reports.

2. Tutorial: Methods of approximation.

3. Computer practical.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required.
