Aims

The course is to provide basic knowledge and understanding of the theory and practical techniques of bioinformatics. The theory of bioinformatics consists of structural biology, enzyme biology and recognition of patterns. On the basis of these parts, the theory provides a platform for the development of new techniques of analysis as well as the interpretation of the results of these methods of analysis.

Content

Biological databases, servers and centres of information. Basic macromolecular structure: 3D structure, PDB coordinates, classification of proteins in structural families, modelling software. Introduction to theory for classification and comparison of sequences and extraction of common features (e.g. motif). Computer modelling of 3D structure from secuence data, sequence analysis for secondary and tertiary structure modelling. Introduction to how methods for pattern recognition that learn from models (e.g. hidden Markov models and artificial neural nets) can be used for development of new analytical tools for bioinformatics.

Lectures and computer assignments.

Assessment

Home work. Written exam at the end of the course.

Laboratory work and assignments are worth 1 academic point.
