Entry requirements

Cell biology. Microbiology. Gene function. Macromolecular machines.

Aims

The course provides knowledge and practical experience of modern gene technology and familiarisation with underlying theory.

Content

View on methods and potential in gene technology in different model systems. Automated DNA sequencing. Genomic hybridisation. Methods of sequencing and amplifying DNA. PCR related techniques and applications. Genotyping. Genome projects. Laboratory project in which students choose methodology and design experiments and laboratory work independently. Preparation of presentation of the work and participation in discussions. The laboratory work takes place in a research facility, if possible. Site visit to a biotechnology company.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, laboratory work and site visits.

Assessment

Written or oral examination at the end of the course. Passed oral and written reports of projects. Practical exercises and laboratory work are assigned 3 points.
