All mandatory courses within the programme.

Aims

The course shall give advanced knowledge of dynamic structures in biological macromolecules and about the advanced methods in physics that today are used for studies of these structures.

Content

Methods for studies of structures and dynamics: diffraction and dynamics; elastic/inelastic, monochromatic/polychromatic, X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction. Diffuse and thermal diffuse scattering. Holography and holographic imaging. Spectroscopy and dynamics. Simulations. Tools to study structural dynamics: lasers, continuous and pulsed laser spectroscopy. Laser induced plasma sources, wake-field accelerators, synchrotrons and related accelerators. Studies on single molecules: spectroscopic methods, optical trapping, mass spectrometry, scattering techniques on single molecules, production of ultrashort radiation pulses.

Laboratory work: Structural kinetics, cryotrapping, time resolved crystallography, molecular dynamics, foldning and function, bioenergetics.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written exam at the end of the course. Practical exercises and experimental work are assigned 3 points.

Two extra occasions for examination will be provided each year, at the end of the term and in august.
