Entry requirements

First degree, basic academic or Bachelor's degree, minimum of 180 ECTS credits (or 120 Swedish credit points) either in medicine, nursing, nutrition or another health-related field such as health sciences, social sciences, dietetics etc. English proficiency.

Aims

At the end of the course students will be able to:

Identify and analyse global and local burden of disease, determinants of health and origin of disease with special reference to the role of gender, vulnerable groups, the interrelationship with poverty and in the context of war, disaster and refugee situations

Analyse health risks and diseases from an epidemiological perspective

Describe different systems for health care delivery, provision of pharmaceutical drugs, and logistic issues in health care delivery

Identify and analyse the role of the main infectious diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoeal diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, STDs including HIV/AIDS, Leishmaniasis, Trypanosomiasis, Schistosomiasis, skin and eye diseases, emerging infections and epidemic outbreaks

Describe globally important nutrient deficiencies, review the interrelationship with poverty, infections and other determinants, describe optimal feeding practices including breastfeeding, analyse main features of a local diet, organise nutrition rehabilitation of severely malnourished children at clinic and home, and organise feeding program in emergencies

Review global child mortality patterns and global commitments for children, apply principles of management of neonates where resources are scarce, of common childhood infections, explain the interactions between nutrition and infections, and plan integrated curative and preventive services for common childhood illnesses

Summarise main elements of human and reproductive rights, describe globally important sexual and reproductive health problems in a life cycle perspective, in a low-resource setting perform a situation analysis and organise antenatal and perinatal care, appropriate family planning services, and STD programs

Provide training of staff in a multi-disciplinary health team in health development work or humanitarian assistance

Content

The course consist of the following modules: International public and epidemiology; Infectious diseases and epidemics; Nutrition; Child Health; Sexual and reproductive health; Humanitarian assistance

Instruction

The course consist of a series of lecture and tutorials, seminars, group work, including preparation for presentations, and individuals study. Sessions are interactive and students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences and exposure to issues ralating to international health.

Assessment

Different assessment procedures are used to measure attainment of learning objectives. In the end of the course there is a written open-book exam or another assignment (essay, classroom presentation). Grades given are "passed" or "failed".
