Entry requirements
Cell biology. Chemistry, basics. Organic chemistry with analytical techniques. Molecular biology or Gene function and Macromolecular machines.
Aims
The course will provide knowledge of the structure, chemistry and function of nucleic acids from a biological and evolutionary perspective. The course will also provide knowledge and training in solving biological problems using chemical-genetical methods, and training in critical analysis of scientific work in the area.
Content
Structure and organisation of nucelic acids. The chemical properties of nucleic acids, especially RNA, from a biological and evolutionary perpective. Basic principles of macro molecular interactions and their dynamics. Tools in chemical biology: combinatoric methods, chemical genetics, in vitro evolution, determination of RNA structure, interactions between macro molecules and small ligands. Emphasis is on the biological relevance, with examples from biological systems, including technical applications.
Instruction
Lectures, group exercises, web based assignments, seminars, literature seminars and laboratory work. Participation in seminars, literature seminars and laboratory work and associated lectures is compulsory.
Assessment
Exams will be arranged during the course and at the end of the course. To pass the course laboratory work, assignments and seminars must have been appoved.
