Atmosphere and of the Earth MN1 or equivalent.
Aims
To provide basic knowledges in radiation, thermodynamic and chemistry in the atmosphere.
Content
The properties of electromagnetic radiation. Absorption and scattering. Solar and terrestrial radiation. Radiation diagrams. Net radiation and energy balance of the earth-atmosphere system. Radiation instruments and measurements. Geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites. Cloud identification and msoscale cloud formations on satellite pictures. The chemical composition and development of the atmosphere. Atmospheric ozone. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Cycles of sulfur and nitrogen com-pounds. Air pollution problems. Thermodynamics of an ideal gas (dry air). Thermal properties of water vapour, water, ice and moist air. Thermodynamic processes in the atmosphere. Aerological diagrams. Height evaluation on diagrams. Horisontal and vertical mixing. Vertical stability. Entrainment. Kelvin's formula. Atmospheric con-densation nuclei. Formation of cloud droplets. Droplet growth by condensation and collision/coalescence. Ice formation. Precipitation processes. Weather modification.
Instruction
Lectures and problem solving sessions.
Assessment
Written Examination at the end of the course. Possible course grades are “fail”, “pass” or “pass with distinction”. A student who fails the exam may try again in agreement with the Co-ordinator of Undergraduate Studies.
