Entry requirements

Mathematics 25 credit points and physics 25 credit points,and Atmospheric physics NV1 5 credit points,and Thermodynamic and cloud physics NV1 5 credit points or Meteorology and climatology (1TV241).

Aims

To provide basic knowledge of the structures and dynamics of atmospheric circulation

and weather systems as well as of the interactions between the atmosphere and the earth

surface.

Content

Synoptic scaling of dynamic equations. The global circulation in the northern hemi-

sphere. Synoptic weather systems as cyclones, anticyclones, air masses, fronts with

areas of clouds and precipitation. Jet streams. Tropical meteorology. Analysis of tempe-

rature and wind in the atmosphere. Synoptic and regional weather chart analysis.

Instruction

Lectures, daily weather discussions and analysis of weather maps.

Assessment

Written Examination at the end of the course. Possible course grades are "fail", "pass" or "pass with distinction". A student who fails the exam may try again in agreement with the Co-ordinator of Undergraduate Studies.
