Entry requirements
The general rules laid down by the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy apply (see programme curriculum).
For entry to the separate course, students are required to fulfil the basic requirements for university entry and to have at least 15 points in pharmaceutical bioscience or the equivalent scientific education.
Aims
The course aims to give the student a knowledge of the modes of action of drugs, a basic understanding of mechanisms at the cellular level, effects and side effects on the human organism and their uses. The student shall have the knowledge needed to contribute in different ways to safe and rational use of drugs in the community.
Content
The course comprises information on how drugs are absorbed, distributed and eliminated from the human body. Their interactions with different target proteins and how this influences cells and the different organs of the body are of central importance. The effects, side affects, interactions with other drugs and therapeutic uses of drugs are also described. The students also learn about radionuclides and their use in drug development and diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Instruction
The tuition comprises lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, video demonstrations and computer exercises. Special emphasis is placed on the student's ability to seek information and solve problems independently.
Compulsory parts of the course:
Laboratory sessions, literature surveys and computer exercises.
Assessment
Written examinations are held at the end of the course. Examinations in laboratory exercises included in the course may be resat in connection with the next course at the earliest and then only if there is a vacancy. Students are required to pass the laboratory course (examination code) and the theoretical examination (examination code) and to have participated in all compulsory parts of the course.
By agreement with the Study Director or Grades Committee, students may resit the examination within four weeks of completion of the course. Re-examination after the spring term takes place at the end of August. Students are allowed to sit the examination up to six times, i.e. the first examination and five re-examinations. Repetition of compulsory parts of the course may be done by agreement with the responsible tutor.
