Entry requirements
Earth Sciences 50 points (75 ECTS credits) including Mineralogy and Petrology MN1, and Chemistry MN1. Alternatively 40 points in Chemistry or Physics.
Aims
To provide knowledge about techniques and instruments used in high-pressure experimental methods under various temperature conditions and the influence of strong magnetic fields. The course also provides theoretical and practical knowledge that aid the interpretation of experimental results.
Content
High-pressure experiments at low and high temperatures, with applications within the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences. Various types of analytical equipment. Pressure distribution and sealing of high-pressure cells. Pressure calibration. Heating applying laser techniques. Various types of crystal chemical, structural and electronic phase changes encountered in the experiments. The use of Mössbauer-, Raman- and Brillions spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction, magnetic, EPR- and NMR analyses under high pressure.
Instruction
Lectures and practical (compulsory).
Assessment
Examination during or at the end of the course. In addition, the compulsory part must be approved.
A student who fails in the exam may try again in the beginning of autumn term.
