Guidelines and Decisions

The Department of History is responsible for the course. The course was approved by the board of the Department of History 2006-06-08 and by the Faculty of Arts 2006-04-16.

Entry requirements

The completion of a Bachelor's degree and a good knowledge of English are required for admission.

Aims

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide advanced insights into the historical development of a particular part of the world. This includes knowledge of the sources available to historians working with this area, as well as familiarity with the methods, theories, and broad questions that have been used by historians and other scholars. Thereby the course will give to the student the necessary background required to pursue research in this particular field.

Employability

Graduates will be employable in a wide variety of occupations such as positions in secondary and higher education (PhD programme), civil service, journalism, as well as in archives, museums and libraries.

Learning outcomes

The student will:

- acquire in-depth knowledge of the history of the chosen area.

- develop a broad, comparative understanding of the sources, theories and methods used in historical sciences.

- acquire an awareness of different perspectives in historical research.

- develop an awareness of the diversity and complexity of historical explanation.

Competences

The student will:

- obtain empirical and theoretical insights into the historical development of the chosen area.

- acquire the capacity to survey a large body of literature, and to identify important continuities and discontinuities.

- attain extensive skills in problem identification and solving, communication, and knowledge sharing.

- acquire a concern for quality.

Instruction

The course consists of tutorials, paper writing, and study of scholarly literature.

Assessment

Examination and grades

Examination consists of active participation in the tutorials and in paper writing. Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system and the ECTS grading system. The following grades will be used: Väl godkänd (corresponds to A and B), Godkänd (corresponds to C), Underkänd (corresponds to Fx or F).

Prerequisites

Students accepted to the European Joint Master's Program in Contemporary Studies, Roads to Democacy(ies), students admitted to the one and the two-year Master's programs of the Faculty of Art and eligible exchange students.

Additional information

If the number of students who wish to take the course is large enough, lectures and seminars will be substituted for the tutorials.
