Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is an important health problem. Most patients have no symptoms prior to rupture, the only way to decrease mortality is to screen and treat healthy individuals. This is feasible with an ultrasound examination, taking only 4 minutes. There are, however, important unresolved issues, regarding ultrasound methodology and the ideal target population, addressed in this research.As a result of screening, many patients with small AAAs are identified, emphasizing the importance of studying aetiology and pathophysiology in order to develop treatment strategies to inhibit growth. Although familiar clustering of AAA was described, the search for a candidate gene has not yet been successful. A biobank was created (blood from patients and controls, tissue from those operated on) for biochemical and genetic studies. A national network for collaboration in genetic investigations was established. The genetic studies on relative telomere length, whole genome association and epigenetics are performed in collaboration with basic scientists. New drugs to reduce growth are developed in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry.AAA surgery is associated with mortality and morbidity. The introduction of minimally invasive (endovascular) operative techniques has changed the management of AAA, outcomes have improved. Projects evaluate and improve the results of contemporary surgery, using national and international registries, as well as translational research.
