The project aims to advance understanding about international negotiating behavior in an original and under-researched area. Specifically, it will investigate factors behind adherence to justice principles in the negotiation process and negotiated outcome (the dependent variable). Our hypotheses specify five factors to examine: the roles of power (in-)equality, negotiating party power, size of negotiation, (non-)normative environment, and domestic constituencies (the independent variables). A rigorous comparative research method - structured focused comparisons (SFCs) -will be used which involves careful selection and matching of cases for study. These will be drawn from three major areas of international negotiations: arms control, trade and the environment (at the multilateral and bilateral levels). Each of the specified hypotheses will be evaluated with an SFC design in these three areas. The project combines methodological rigor with multidisciplinary breadth, to permit a systematic examination of factors that explain adherence to justice principles. It will generate both case-specific and more generally valid results, which should be of interest from theoretical, empirical and policy perspectives. Better knowledge about such factors will provide important insights for how to improve effectiveness in international negotiations - a major challenge in international affairs today - as justice adherence has been shown to often have a positive impact in that regard.
