Political representation is a precondition for human life in a democratic society. Today, nevertheless, a growing number of refugees, migrants and stateless persons ? and not only them ? live invisible and unheard lives. This condition does not only lead to a violation of their human rights and make them vulnerable to domination; their human dignity is hurt. This affects the self-understanding of both members and non-members in a society in a way that jeopardize the very foundation of a democratic society. In response to this problem theorists have begun to question the Aristotelian distinction between a political ?form of life? and ?bare life and instead suggested a space ?in-between? these two states of being, sometimes formulated as a divide between humans and nonhumans. The purpose of the project is to rethink the space of ?in-between? in order to enable a new kind of ethical thinking that includes the non-heard and invisible non-members in a community. The project has three aims: a) to examine the problem of identifying the status of the ?in-between? (both politically and aesthetically), b) to investigate the political and aesthetic aspects of representation, and c) to ask how art and literature ? here regarded as performative expressions that enable a space for the ?in-betweens? ? can contribute to theoretical thinking and political praxis. To conduct this research we turn the writings of Arendt and Cixous, supplemented by aesthetic expressions of Kafka and Trotzig.
