Although Sweden is considered being on the top internationally regarding both gender equality politics and the production of information, specially statistics, the research field of gender and the built environment shows serious shortcomings both empirically and theoretically. There is an urgent need of developing gender perspectives in both planning and housing theory. There is also a limited knowledge on the conditions that women and men confront in the housing market and the role of the legacy of enlightenment androcentric knowledge traditions in planning and housing theories. The project aims to fill this knowledge gaps through a combined quantitative and qualitative study in a longitudinal approach, and a major theoretical reflection. The Swedish housing market in crises might present major difficulties for women, single mothers and couples in dissolution. These demographic categories combined to other variables, analyzed in an intersectional dialect relation will steer the empirical studies. The empirical material generated will come from one existing longitudinal database, one major survey to be carried out, several interview studies and one situation testing study. The theoretical perspectives in this project are feminist theory, social constructivist spatial theory, intersectionality and science and technology. The theoretical innovation will consist in the integration of these four lines of thought into a revisited feminist approach to the built environment.
