We intend to establish understanding of the ordering and phase transitions of two dimensional (2D) mesoscopic structures. The structures will be patterned from thin films, forming islands of appropriate size. The overall strategy is based upon three main lines of research: (i) exploration of the size dependence of the magnetic state in mesoscopic structures (1-30 nm thick, 50-500 nm in diameter) (ii) investigations of the effect of inter-island interactions on the inner magnetic states (iii) exploration of the collective behaviour of the elements, including the inner order and excitations. The inter island interaction will be chosen by the distance between the elements. Special emphasis will be on the effective exponents of the second order phase transition of the mesoscopic elements, for spin dimensionality 1 and 2 (Ising and XY). These efforts will lay the fundament for understanding of the interplay between the two involved length scales, and thereby provide a fundament for understanding the emergent behaviour of such systems. The effort is at the absolute research frontier, providing excellent training grounds for young scientist.
