We propose a coordination of all Swedish prospective population-based cohorts in a common infrastructure, aiming to support all aspects of cohort operations, including data storage, cataloguing, access, harmonization, statistical analysis, and collaborative activities.During the coordination period, we will finalize and evaluate a large pilot study involving the collaborate effort of pooling data from 21 Swedish cohorts. We will map the current status of cohorts, using questionnaires, interviews, workshops, and focus groups with cohort representatives and users. The new technical and collaborative infrastructure will be designed in close collaboration with all participating cohorts, universities, and other relevant national and international research infrastructures.Combining multiple cohorts gives more precise research findings due to better-powered studies. It also permits adequately powered research on rare diseases and exposures, as well as analyses of long-term trends in exposures and diseases, both of which are impossible in single cohorts. This leads to better utilization of study participants’ data, better return of investment of funders’ money, and higher benefit to patients and populations. Sweden is one of very few countries where this is possible, due to our long tradition of prospective cohort research and uniform registry reporting. The Swedish Cohort Consortium will enable world-leading research, ultimately changing prognosis for patients and populations.
