Extended DREAM: Multiple-length scale approach to functional nanomaterials

Development of novel nanomaterials requires a detailed knowledge of the composition and structure from the atomic bond level (sub-Å) to the mesoscopic level (nm) that gives information about the particle morphology. The combination of scattering measurements at high and low angles can enable the study at multiple length scales simultaneously.In this proposal we plan to develop, in close collaboration with the DREAM and ESS sample environments (SE) that will facilitate the study of nanomaterials such as biomaterials, battery components, and magnetic nanoparticles, at multiple length scales simultaneously in situ or in operando using powder diffraction, total scattering and small-angle scattering. Eventually, we plan to purchase and implement a small angle detector at DREAM.Beyond the impact on the science we expect that through the development of dedicated SEs we will also build a community with very strong ties with the team at DREAM-ESS. In fact, in addition to the main proposer of the DREAM instrument, some of the current proposers were proposers for the scientific cases in the area of nanoscience. The scientific cases put forward in this proposal concern relevant classes of nanomaterials from the Swedish perspective. The development of a multiple length scale approach that exploits the advantages of neutrons will have a strong influence in the development of the community working with nanomaterials and also in the training of Swedish scientists in neutron scattering.
