The coupling of nuclear motion to electron transfer is of highinterest as it is utilized in numerous biological events. For many years, proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) hasbeen at the forefront of this study. Recently, coupling PCET to light has gained interest. Current PCET mechanismsare studied in three broadly defined classifications; 1) diffusion controlled, 2) a covalently linked donor and acceptor,and 3) a non-covalent, hydrogen bound donor and acceptor. This proposal seeks to develop a new system forproton-coupled electron transfer in which the electron donor and acceptor are brought together through coulombicforces in an ion-pair. Spectroscopic characterization of the ion-pairs in the system and mechanistic investigations willallow control over the PCET mechanisms observed in the system. Intellectual Merit: As PCET is invaluable to manychemical transformations the design and study of new PCET systems is imperative. However, none of the activelyinvestigated systems above use coulombic attraction to associate the electron donor and acceptor. This is surprisingas association is paramount for PCET processes to occur and has been extensively studied in ion-paired electrontransfer. Therefore, it is proposed to utilize coulombic attraction to pre-associate the donor and acceptor in the PCETmechanism in an ion-pair.
