The scientific goal of Biobank Sweden (BIS) is to provide efficient, coordinated and sustainable use of biobank samples and associated healthcare and molecular analysis data as the basis for internationally leading research. The infrastructure was initiated in 2018 and is a consortium of all Swedish universities with medical faculties (Universities of Umeå, Uppsala, Örebro, Linköping, Göteborg, Lund and the Karolinska Institute) and their respective healthcare providers (Region Västerbotten, Region Uppsala, Region Örebro län, Region Östergötland, Västra Götalandsregionen, Region Skåne and Region Stockholm). The consortium is governed by an Overarching Agreement between the partners, a Collaboration Agreement relating to the VR funding and local collaboration agreements. During the start-up phase (2018-2019) the key transformation is to increase formal and operational integration of university biobanks and their healthcare regional counterparts. In the full-scale phase, outlined in this proposal, BiS will work towards full integration of local service facilities, national harmonization of IT-systems, national solutions for ELSI issues including consent, optimized use of existing biobank samples for research and active contribution to the European biobank infrastructure BBMRI-ERIC.The infrastructure consists of the following operational modules:Organization and managementAdministrative, legal and ethical supportIntegration in joint local biobank facilitiesNational integrationInternational integrationBiobank ServiceIT development, implementation and supportOptimized Use of Existing Biobank SamplesNational Coordination Projects
