Professor Elizabeth Shepherd (UCL) talks on MIRRA research
Professor Elizabeth Shepherd (UCL) talks on MIRRA research into care leavers record access in a presentation titled “‘My lack of voice’: human-centred recordkeeping and the MIRRA research project”. The seminar will be held in English.
Abstract
In family settings stories, photographs and memory objects document significant events, celebrations and milestones and support narratives of identity and belonging. Records and archives give families and individuals access to shared histories and values. But for some people, such as children who live in out-of-home settings, these are missing. Children and young people in care often lack such narratives. They may be unable to fill gaps in their memories or answer simple questions about their early lives. The MIRRA research project at UCL sought to understand the role that records and recordkeeping play in child social care and the lifelong value of records for the people whose childhoods they document. How can the processes of creating, managing and providing access to records be positively changed to better support care leavers throughout their lives?
