Högre seminarium: Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert - De-colonizing photographic archives: an arts-based research approach

Abstract

How can we understand the past when history is written by those in power? Can museum photographic archives help reveal hidden stories that are absent from written records? Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert explores colonial-era photographic archives related to Cypriot archaeology. Through arts-based research, she unearths the stories of local Cypriot workers who played a key role in Cypriot archaeology, but who were left out of official records, and reflects on how colonial-era legacies and power imbalances continue to influence present-day technological tools such as AI.
