Abstract: We examine how AI adoption affects firm work using German social security records from 2010 to 2024. We use a novel, text-based measure of a firm's AI adoption based on firms' website content. We validate the new measure with survey data, and occupation-level measures of initial firm exposure to AI. We find that AI adoption remains limited but increases rapidly. While its scale is too small to impact aggregate labor market outcomes, comparing AI adopters with similar non-adopters reveals notable differences in the evolution of employment and expertise.
