Are you looking for new inspiration for your teaching? Are you looking for contemporary novels to read with your students? Are you interested in connecting English teen literature to the recent changes in our curriculums focusing on sexuality, consent and relationships? This is the book circle for you!

We will be reading a series of teen novels during 2025 and this fall we will read the graphic teen novel Heartstopper: Volume 4 by Alice Oseman. This novel is well suited for students in years 7-9, English level 1, or for those who find it challenging to engage with traditional books. Heartstopper tells the story of Nick and Charlie, aged 17 and 15, who become boyfriends. However, it is not just a story about queer love, sexuality and gender, it also addresses important themes such as eating disorders, self-harm, relationships and friendship.

In these two seminars, we will first explore the themes in the book and then work together to develop teaching content you can use in your classroom, all while brushing up on your English skills.

The Swedish curriculum:

The changes in the introductory parts of the curriculum, which have been applied since the autumn of 2022 in both upper secondary school and compulsory school, show that schools have a responsibility to ensure that students repeatedly encounter issues related to sexuality, consent, and relationships throughout their education, as well as critically examine norms, claims, and conditions. Students should be encouraged to develop their abilities and interests without being limited by preconceived notions of what is feminine and masculine.
