Nathaniel Condit-Schultz, Georgia Institute of Technology (USA): “Click, Click, Click: Empirical explorations of tempo, tactus, and metric phase in popular music”

Abstract
In this talk, I explore and discuss the objective and subjective interactions between tempo, metric period, and metric phase, drawing on results from behavioral experiments and computational analysis of both audio features and symbolic musical datasets. In the first half, I will share recent work related to the instability of beats in real music. In the second half, I will present my current project studying statistical relationships between rhythms and metric phase (affecting the perception of syncopation) and metric period (affecting the perception of tempo and tactus).
