When a nation or country undergoes a military, cultural or economic threat, or when it becomes a part of a foreign empire, the “national identity” tends to become stronger. Hence, the former Soviet space where former republics’ foreign policies are heavily influenced by societies notions of itself, (aka “national identity”). This is especially the case in Azerbaijan, where political institutions are still emerging. Foreign policy decision-making leaves a fare space to be driven by the nation’s distinction of itself.
Shafag Mehraliyeva, CARSI scholar from ADA University in Baku will break down in her seminar the national identity of Azerbaijanis and look into how it shapes the foreign policy of the country and, particularly defines relationship with Russia. Shafag Mehraliyeva is a founding director of the Communication and Media program at ADA University and serves on the Board of MEDIA Development Agency of Azerbaijan. Ms. Mehraliyeva joined ADA in October, 2012, bringing with her an extensive experience of 12 year assignment in the United States, where she worked as a US correspondent for “AzerTAj” state telegraph agency. She holds a bachelor degree in English and Arabic Studies from "Khazar" University in Baku and Masters in International Policy and Practice from George Washington University in Washington. D.C.
