Natalia Tomenko will talk about the role of Ukrainian Roma activism during the ongoing war, which is both critical and multifaceted, highlighting significant contributions alongside persistent challenges. The conflict has deepened long-standing inequalities, such as limited access to education, healthcare, and housing, leading to the displacement of over 100,000 Roma individuals. Yet, in the face of systemic discrimination, Roma activists have stepped up—engaging in national defense, delivering humanitarian aid, and taking on leadership roles within their communities. They ensure Roma voices are not left behind by mobilizing resources, preserving cultural identity, and advocating for inclusion in Ukraine’s reconstruction. By showcasing the work of the Youth Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture “ARCA,” this presentation will illustrate the breadth and impact of our efforts. At ARCA, we firmly believe that as Ukraine moves closer to EU integration, addressing these inequalities and honoring Roma contributions is essential to building a truly inclusive and democratic society.
