Is Latvia at a Crossroads?

This and many other questions were discussed at an international interdisciplinary conference ”Latvia at a Crossroads. The Centenary of the Latvian State” hosted by IRES on October 11 and 12. This conference brought together researchers from across Europe and North America and from a variety of different disciplines to facilitate discussion of the social, political, economic and cultural context of Latvia. Twenty-three papers were delivered in seven thematic panels designed to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussion. The conference was successful with thought-provoking presentations and vivid discussions.  

The conference organisers were Dr. Michael Loader (Postdoctor, Uppsala University), Dr. Siobhan Hearne (Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Latvia), and Dr. Matthew Kott (Researcher, Uppsala University).

The event was funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, IRES, the Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice, and the British Association for Slavonic & East European Studies (BASEES).
