The Irish Embassy and the Department of Government invite you to a seminar by Professor Brendan O'Leary where the transformations of Ireland, North and South, over the last 30 years, and the futures they may portend, are analyzed.
Brendan O’Leary, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, and author of the prize-winning books A Treatise on Northern Ireland (Oxford University 2020, 3 volumes) and Making Sense of a United Ireland (Penguin Ireland 2022) was educated at Oxford University and the London School of Economics & Political Science—where he chaired its Government Department. An Irish, EU, and US citizen, he was born in Cork in the Republic of Ireland, but grew up in Nigeria, Sudan, and Northern Ireland.
The author, co-author, editor, and co-editor of 30 books, he has worked extensively on power-sharing in deeply divided places—and was one of the first members of the Standby Team of the United Nations Mediation Support Unit. He has been a constitutional advisor to the European Union, the United Nations, and to the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq, and a political advisor to a range of parties and governments during the Irish peace process and the making and implementation of the Good Friday Agreement negotiated in Belfast in 1998.
He is the inaugural winner of the Juan Linz prize of the International Political Science Association for work on federalism and democracy in multi-ethnic places.
