Abstract

Human proteins build our bodies but also perform essential functions relating to for instance cell communication and regulation of gene transcription. These complex systems can, however, be pushed out of equilibrium by infections and other, non-communicable disease. Through molecular measurements of protein concentrations in an accessible tissue such as blood, we can diagnose and monitor a wide range of diseases. However, many other factors such as ageing, anthropometrics and lifestyle choices are also reflected in the protein concentrations found in our blood. In this lecture, I will talk about how recent technological advancements allow us to map the protein landscape on a large scale and how non-disease-related factors could influence these measurements. I will exemplify how we can use this variation to build predictive models of personal traits and obtain more robust models for predicting disease.
