Naturalists and ‘physico’ or ‘natural’ theology
In this talk, Professor Carey will explore the culture of Enlightenment natural theology to reveal the deeply religious culture within which Linnaeus and other naturalists of the period worked. The talk will consider Linnaeus in the context of the eighteenth-century culture of ‘physico’ or ‘natural’ theology.
Naturalists at the time were often motivated by the desire to understand God and his creation. Natural theologists, very often ordained clergy themselves, were at the centre of the developing life sciences. Although not a minister of religion himself, Linnaeus was inspired by natural theology – in which he was in agreement with the majority of naturalists of his time.
Brycchan Carey, professor i litteratur, kultur och historia
Brycchan Carey är professor på Northumbria University i Newcastle upon Tyne, Storbritannien. Han har bl a ägnat sig åt kolonial historia, slaveriets och abolitionismens historia samt ämnen kring miljö och natur. Han har publicerat en lång rad böcker på dessa teman. Hans senaste publikation är The Unnatural Trade. Slavery, Abolition, and Environmental Writing, 1650–1807. Brycchan Carey har även varit ordförande i British Society for Eighteenth Century Studies.
