When is calculus not "just calculus"? - Why students struggle to apply calculus in other disciplines
The teaching and learning of calculus is a central topic in the research on higher education, due to its great importance in all STEM subjects. In this seminar, we will give an overview of student difficulties in calculus and about some attempts that have been suggested to alleviate them. We will then consider some differences between how calculus is used in other subjects and in mathematics itself, since many of the problems that students face occur when they are asked to apply their mathematical knowledge in the context of other disciplines.
