How can we make engineering ethics more engaging than a list of rules or abstract case studies? One answer is film: stories that bring ethical dilemmas to life and connect them to human experience. In this seminar, Thomas Lennerfors will show how movies can be used as powerful tools for teaching engineering ethics, offering narratives and characters that make complex issues tangible and emotionally engaging.
As an example, he will use The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki, which portrays the life of an aircraft designer navigating the tension between technical ambition, personal values, and societal consequences. Through this case, we will discuss how movies can spark critical conversations about professional responsibility, the social impact of technology, and the human dimensions of engineering work. We will also reflect on practical ways to integrate film into teaching and create meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
This seminar will be held in English.
The event does not require pre-registration. To guarantee a seat, please send an email to tur-teknat@uu.se by December 4.
