Hamburg/Vienna Summer School: Alien Languages and Alien Metaphysics

We are delighted to announce that the 2023 Hamburg/Vienna Summer School will be taught by Matti Eklund (Uppsala University). This year’s topic will be Alien Languages and Alien Metaphysics. The event will take place July 24–28 at the University of Vienna.

What sorts of languages can there be? More specifically, what sorts of semantic differences can there be between languages? Can there be alien languages – languages whose expressions function semantically in a different kind of way from the expressions of familiar languages? These questions are also of potential relevance to metaphysics. Might reality have alien metaphysical structure, better captured by an alien kind of language?

In this course, we will look at these questions in philosophy of language and metaphysics, as well as the metaphilosophical issues they raise. The idea is to learn something about language and representation by considering what languages there can be, and to learn something about metaphysics by considering what the possibility of alien languages tells us about questions regarding the structure of reality.
