Mål

This course provides an introduction to media and communication science. The course aims at introducing basic concepts and models for the scientific study of media and communication, and to demonstrate how the media are related to culture and society, and it offers an overview of how media can be studied – as structure, production, content and from an audience/reception point of view.

After completed course, the students should have

Knowledge and Understanding

- general knowledge of basic concepts, models, and theories relevant to the scientific study of human communication and the mass media

- an understanding of the role of communication and the media in the shaping and development of culture and society

- an understanding of the role of the media in the lives of individuals

- an awareness of the relationship between the media and various social problems and aspects of society

Skills and capacities

- an ability to critically appreciate and discuss the cultural and social role of the media

- the capacity to see and analyse media performance and content from a gender perspective

Evaluative capacity and approach

- recognize the cultural and moral responsibility of media

- an understanding for the political/democratical potential of mass media.

Innehåll

Media history, different forms of media technology and media development are covered. The politics and the economy of the media are discussed and the idea of the public sphere is given special attention. The relationship between media and society is analysed.

Undervisning

Lectures and seminars.

Examination

Written and/or oral examination. Written exams can be take-home ones. Fulfilled seminar assignements. The grading system has three grades:VG (Väl godkänd, Passed with Distinction), G (Godkänd, Passed) and U (Underkänd, Failed)
