About the course

This course focuses on how to practically sample populations of plants and animals in the context of nature conservation and environmental monitoring. You will learn practical methods that an ecologist must master to work in nature conservation at governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Through practicals and lectures, the course covers the design, implementation, statistical analysis, and written and oral communication of ecological surveys and data. Field practicals on GIS mapping, bird inventories, insect traps and plant surveys are core components of the course; and to apply methods that are standard in applied conservation and monitoring programs in Sweden and the EU. The course includes extensive practice with R programming, including analysis of existing datasets. During a week-long field course, you will design and carry out ecological projects; applying your knowledge of the methods covered during the course.

The course includes a one-week field course in May/June.
