Entry requirements

60 credits in science/engineering including 5 credits in electricity. Participation in one of the courses Electronics I, Electromagnetism (10 credits), Electromagnetism II with Electric Circuits or participation in both Electromagnetism I and Electric Circuit Analysis.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • explain basic AC theory in three-phase systems,
  • calculate active and reactive effects generated in electrical networks,
  • describe the structure of the three-phase system, including components thereof and their function,
  • perform losses and power flow calculations in transmission lines,
  • calculate losses and power flows in single-phase and three-phase transformers,
  • perform losses and power flow calculations for synchronous generators.

Content

The electric power system: three phase systems, AC transmission, single phase equivalent circuits for transformers, rotating machines (generators), cables, transmission lines and its components such as switchgear and ancillary equipment. Introduction to electricity market.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises and laboratory experoments. 

Assessment

Written examination (4 credits),   assignments and laboratory work (1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
