Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is Introduction to Sustainable Destination Development.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe tourism's environmental impact in different spatial and temporal scales
  • describe different ways to measure and quantify tourism's environmental impact
  • summarize the possibilities and limitations of environmental certification and eco-tourism

Content

The environmental impacts of tourism will be identified and categorized in the context of sustainable development. Different ways of measuring and quantifying environmental impact, including activities such as transport and resource use, will addressed with an emphasis on concepts and tools such as life cycle analysis, ecological footprint and carbon footprint. Spatial and temporal variations in environmental impact will also be analysed for different types of tourism. Throughout the course proactive solutions and suggestions to minimise environmental impact from tourism will be studied. Critical analysis of the possibilities and limitations of ecolabelling and ecotourism are a central part of this.

Instruction

Teaching will be conduction in the form of lectures, exercises, literature seminars and study visits.

Assessment

Written examination (5 credits) as well as exercises and seminars (2.5 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
