At the very beginning of their first term, all students on the Masterprogram in the Humanities with a specialisation in archaeology will design their own curriculum in consultation with members of staff. The curriculum does not include mandatory courses, but we will give recommendations on how to best combine courses, workplace practice and thesis work to accomodate the student's interests and thesis topic.

Apart from the courses offered on faculty level, the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History offers a number of archaeology courses every term. Most of these courses comprise 7.5 credits and are given over half a semester (half-time studies). Furthermore, students can apply for advanced-level courses given at the Swedish Institutes in Athens and Rome. These are full-time courses comprising either 7.5 or 15 credits. Students work on their degree thesis in parallel with attending courses on campus, devoting half their study time to this activity. The workplace practice courses comprise 7.5 or 15 credits and should be placed so that they do not impact on the final phases of thesis writing. Students are responsible for finding their own internships, which must be approved by the Director of Studies. Moreover, a written agreement is to be drawn up between the students and their on-site mentors, and signed by both parties.

The 7.5 credit writing course is given at quarter-time and students will participate during every term of the programme. However, due to regulations at CSN (the Swedish Government agency in charge of financial aid to students) students can only be registered on the course during one term. Students may decided for themselves which term to be registered on the course, but we recommend the last term to free up time for thesis work.
