Meet a student on the programme

Name: Tyyra Tuohimaa
From: Finland

The programme is incredibly international. My class consists of students from nine different countries across three continents, bringing together a unique group of people with different legal backgrounds.

How did you choose your programme?
– Throughout my legal studies I have been interested in dispute resolution so when I came across this programme while researching different Master of Laws programs, I thought it would be a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge in dispute resolution - specifically arbitration - and additionally specialise in investor-state arbitration.

What is something special about your programme?
– The Investment Treaty Arbitration (ITA) programme is special in several ways, but there are two aspects that I would like to highlight. First, the ITA programme is incredibly international. This year's class consists of students from nine different countries across three continents, bringing together a unique group of people with different legal backgrounds.

– Secondly, the International Adjunct Faculty of our programme is fantastic as it consists of leading actors from private practice, government, international and non-governmental organisations and leading international scholars. Their visits and lectures are incredibly valuable to us students as they not only provide professional insight into arbitration and the work they individually do but also give us a great opportunity to network with legal professionals in this field.

What is it like to be an international student?
– Uppsala University is very welcoming and well-equipped for international students. The University makes sure that all international students feel welcomed in Uppsala and provides services that international students can use to help find their way when they arrive in Sweden. Additionally, as an international student, I have had nothing but positive experiences taking part in Swedish student life and many of my international friends here have said the same.

Name three things you are doing this week.
– Our third module began this week so I will be in the library studying and preparing for the upcoming lectures and exercises. I just moved apartments so I will be unpacking my bags and getting settled in. Lastly, I am doing a short weekend trip three hours north of Uppsala to go watch a Swedish national ice hockey league match with friends.

What is your reason for studying?
– My ultimate goal is to be an international lawyer working in dispute resolution. After completing this Master’s programme I hope to work in a dispute resolution team in a law firm where I would also get to work in the realm of arbitration.

Describe the student life!
– Uppsala student life is largely run by the various student nations around the city, which all have their own atmosphere and extracurricular activities. Some of them host weekly student parties and others offer great cafes to study in. Some offer very affordable breakfast, lunch or dinner. My best experiences so far have been going to test out the different nation-parties with friends and having breakfast at Stockholms nation before a busy study day.
