Entry requirements

120 ECTS credits with minimum 90 ECTS credits in Earth Science, Biology or Physics alternatively 90 ECTS credits in Physics in combination with 30 ECTS credits in Earth Science (Geophysics). In addition knowledge and skill corresponding to Dynamic Geosystems - Global Change 10 ECTS credits alternatively Advanced Course in Earth Science 10 ECTS credits are required.

Learning outcomes

After the course, the student will be able to

  • recognise spectroscopic methods and isotope geology as instruments for the understanding of endogenic and exogenic processes, from a regional as well as from a global perspective
  • basic principles of Raman and infrared spectroscopy and isotope geology, as advanced geochemical methods, including measurement procedures, and compilation and processing of data
  • interpretation of results from various geological archives, such as water, sediments and rocks
  • how data on the isotopic composition of the water molecule and other environmental isotopes in water can be used for analysis of hydrological processes
  • application of results for critical analysis, and connection between influence of currently active anthropogenic and natural processes.

Content

Theoretical background for Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and for isotope geology. Interpretive methods for spectroscopic and isotope data from the point of view of geoscientific problems. Application aspects and evaluation of results relevant for geoprocesses through different archives, with a special focus on the own project-oriented work.

Instruction

Lectures, laboratory work, own project, and completion of report with feedback to chosen problems.

Assessment

Written examination 5 ECTS, presentation of project work 5 ECTS.
