Learning outcomes
To provide students with advanced knowledge of some aspects of human perceptual functioning, as well as some common visualisation techniques, that is central to the design of effective visualisations.
After a successful completion of the course module the student is expected to:
Knowledge and understanding
– Identify general concepts and theories of human visual perception relevant to the design of effective and efficient visualisations.
– Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of central aspects of human visual perception and their use in the design of effective and efficient visualisations.
– Explain the complex issues associated with designing effective visualisations with clarity and from an informed perspective by drawing upon recent academic research in visual perception.
Content
- Evaluate computer generated visualisations by drawing upon principles and theories from vision science
- Select appropriate visualisation strategies and justify the chosen approaches.
Values and attitudes
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the value of scientific research within the field of Information Visualisation.
Indicative content
Visual environments and optics; lightness, brightness, contrast and constancy; colour; attention ; object perception; space perception; common types of visualisations; the effectiveness and efficiency of visualisations; information visualisation as a science.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, tutoring, group work and self-directed learning
Assessment
The students are assed through the quality of their coursework and the results on a written exam.
