Entry requirements

Nursing degree and at least 6 months work experience as a qualified nurse. Diabetes Care I, 15 credits.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should show skills and abilities to

- explain special needs in children and youth with type 1 and type 2 diabetes

- explain the developmental stages, hormonal changes at puberty and its effect on the diabetes of the child

- identify dangerous behaviours at children and youth with diabetes

- plan and carry out teaching of diabetes to children and youths

- take position to insulin treatment at children and youths with diabetes

- take position to in which situations insulin pump treatment is relevant

- give supports to parents in their parental role.

- suggest nursing actions at acute diabetes complications

- motivate and support children and youth with diabetes to manage self-treatment together with their parents

- compile, evaluate and apply new knowledge and research results about children and youth with diabetes

Instruction

Literature studies, lectures, group assignments, seminars and specific study assignments connected to different subparts.

Assessment

To pass the course, participation in all lectures, passed individual take-home examination and passed group assignment, are required.
